Media

The media distorts and dictates people's view over young women and girls. It creates a rift in society whereby women are seen as only sexual objects without a brain. It also creates an image that young girls feel that they have to fulfil which sets them back in life and creates low self esteem issues. Barbie is seen as a perfect woman but when I asked a young girl (aged 4) what she thought of Barbie she said:
"Barbie is very pretty, I want to be like her."
I then asked her if she thought Barbie could be a lawyer and she said:
"No but Ken could."
If we are creating a stereotype that girls should just be beautiful and wait on the man hand and foot what society will we have? People do not realise that the media world is distorted to increase consumerism. Society is dictated by a fake image and the next generation will be governed by consumerism and media.

God of merciful love,
Help these families who are victims of murder
To accept the reality of such senseless acts of violence
Without, at the same time,
Succumbing to the despair of so great a loss.
May this violence become for them, instead,
A steppingstone toward greater union with you.

3 Things that Need Changing

1. Climate Change The world is slowly dying and amendments need to be made to the way we live. Too much energy is being used and we are slowly killing the Earth.

2. Eradicate Poverty. We cannot let children suffer and starve whilst those in Western society pander to consumerism.

3. Gender Equality. I have grown up in a patriarchal world where women are second in the pecking order. We need gender equality in the world. 

Highlighting the plight of India's manual scavengers

It's an occupation carried out by dalits (formerly untouchables) in which safai karmacharis, as manual scavengers are known, clean out human excreta from wealthy households' latrines - toilets that are not connected to the sewage system and are therefore not flushable. This degrading practice is traditionally imposed upon certain dalit sub-caste groups, especially the women, with the result that 82% of manual scavengers are female. These women are forced to work in unthinkable conditions, humiliated and discriminated against.But another shocking scandal of this story is that this practice continues despite the fact that it was outlawed in 1993. Today, tens of thousands of manual scavengers are still cleaning out other people’s loos by hand with a small brush and basket. Why?`Because local state authorities seem to tacitly agree with the casteist ideology that assigns unclean occupations to dalits claiming that safai karmacharis are content with their work,’ says a spokesperson from Safai Karmachari Andolon (SKA), a movement supported by Christian Aid.
